Description

This is a responsible level of skilled work in the operation of heavy refuse collection trucks and in the directing of an assigned collection crew. Work involves the responsibility for the operation and care of a heavy duty refuse collection truck which is equipped with a hydraulic packer and dump mechanism.
Work also involves the responsibility for directing the performance of an assigned collection crew. Work is performed under the general direction of the Superintendent of Refuse who delegates duties through both oral and written assignments. Work is reviewed while in progress or upon completion.

Examples of Duties

This list may not include all tasks and/or knowledge which may be expected of the employee, nor does it cover all specific duties which may be required. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Operates a heavy duty refuse collection truck equipped with a hydraulic packer and dump mechanism.
  • Follows established collection routes and maintains collection schedules.
  • Directs the operation of a collection crew; keeps alert at all times while refuse is being loaded and pressure packed in order to reduce potential injury of crew members.
  • Assures that the truck is properly equipped, cleaned, and services; performs minor maintenance and reports repair needs to supervisor.
  • Reports violations of refuse collection regulations to supervisor.
  • Makes special runs in attending to complaints.
  • Collects, carries, and empties refuse from containers on occasion when required.

Typical Qualifications

General Skill Levels
Knowledge in:

  • Operating principles and maintenance requirements of packer type refuse collection trucks.
  • Traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations involved in equipment operation.
  • Occupational hazards and the applicable safety rules and regulations of equipment operation.
  • City street and house numbering system.
Skills in:
  • Skill in the operation of all assigned equipment.Ā 
Ability to:
  • Detect needed repair and maintenance.
  • Direct the work of laborers and to instruct them on the rules and procedures of refuse collection.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees, City officials and the general public.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Education/Experience:
  • Required - Completion of ten grades of school and the ability to read and understand both oral and written instructions; experience in refuse collection and/or the operation of medium sized trucks; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, abilities, and skills.

Certificates/Licenses:
  • Required - Possession and maintenance of a valid Illinois Class B Commercial Driver's License.
