Primary Purpose

Operates heavy-duty trucks for the transportation of equipment, construction materials or refuse.

Essential Job Functions

  • Inspects trucks and equipment prior to and during operation; performs minor maintenance of equipment.
  • Including cleaning and washing, flat and equipment repair; performs brake inspections and adjustments; maintains daily logs; prepares reports as needed.
  • Transports refuse from transfer station to landfill; operates scraper to haul dirt to cover refuse; operates refuse compactor; operates grader to maintain roads in and surrounding landfill; operates dozer to dig and cover as needed.
  • Weighs commercial and non-commercial vehicles using landfill, and maintains records of activity.

Knowledge/Skills: 

  • Working knowledge of truck operating systems; and of minor vehicle maintenance and repair. 
  • Ability to follow verbal and/or written instructions; to maintain logs and prepare reports; and to perform basic arithmetical computations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent plus any combination of formal training and experience in truck driving totaling two (2) years.
  • Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class B Drivers License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties. 
  • Must obtain class A license within three (3) months of hire.

Working Conditions:

 

Work is performed outdoors in varied weather conditions. Work schedule may include evening, weekend and holiday hours.  Sitting, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, and lifting required.  May be subject to exposure of odors, fumes, and chemicals.   Will be subject to random drug screening.

             

Conditions of Employment:

 

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class B Drivers License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties. Must obtain class A license within three (3) months of hire.
