General Description:
The purpose of this class within the organization is to maintain and drive commercial vehicles for the Public Works Departments on a specified route. This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent and some experience in the operation of medium-sized trucks. Requires one year in heavy truck operations or closely related experience. The equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and current DOT Medical Card required.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations governing equipment operation.
- Knowledge of the principles of operation of large trucks.
- Ability to read and follow printed / electronic maps or navigation devices.
- Ability to login and check e-mails, Compass, Local Gov U, MS office, ArcGIS online, City Works and use mobile applications to perform collection task.
- Ability to supervise the work of co-workers and to instruct them in rules and procedures.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
- Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
- Performs various general activities including loading recyclables, garbage, brush, leaves, bulky trash, dead animals, and other debris onto collection trucks, or delivering or repairing bins.
- Effectively, safely and in a timely manner, operate solid waste collection trucks and other equipment in the performance of commercial or residential routes, uncontained solid waste collection and support services requirements.
- Operates one or more of the following:
- Automated side-loader, commercial frontend loader, manual rear loader, grappler, wheel loader or open-body truck in the collection of garbage and rubbish usually on established routes, automated leaf vacuum (directs the work of an assigned crew), and / or
- Recycling trucks, which sorts, loads, and unloads recyclables according to established procedures and routes.
- A minimum of one hundred twenty-eight (128) hours of operation of each truck every year is required.
- Ensures truck is operational, fuels truck, washes, and greases, conducts per-trip and post-trip inspections, reports need for maintenance or repair of equipment to supervisor or Fleet Services Division.
- Performs routine housekeeping on assigned vehicles and equipment to include cleaning inside of cab, hopper and dump body, behind packer blade and under carriage.
- Maintains records of tagged garbage, yard waste, trash or recycling and road hazards such as potholes, low hanging tree limbs and submits records to office daily.
- Empties the collection truck daily at the assigned locations and follows the safety regulations required by the facility.
- Completes the assigned collection route each day and keeps a record of problems or violations.
- Enters collection date to create work orders for new bins, repairs, potholes, extra trash.
- Gets out of the truck to move bins that are blocked, too far from the road, to leave a violation notice, pickup extra bagged trash, takes pictures of violations, loads bulky items into a rear loading truck, rakes leaves, picks up loose trash, empties recycling bins.
- Ensures the computers and assigned equipment are clean and in working order, ensures cameras are turned in daily with violation information, maintains uniforms, safety equipment and assigned tools.
- Performs medium to heavy work that involves climbing, walking, standing, stooping, lifting, bending, digging, pushing, and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
- Directs the work of an assigned crew.
